    Jose Reyes Carranza

I’m a stranger and I come to stroll
I want to know how the city is
    I bring Juliana, my companion
I bring some rice from my rice field.

I’m a stranger from the mountain
I have cornfields and a bean field
And my little hut made of manaca
Was left alone in the coffee plantation.

But oh Jesus! What will they say?
If I lose my hut, I will die
Well, I don’t know, I start to think
If they steal my lands, I can’t sow.

    On Sundays, when I rest
I call my dogs and go hunting
I hunt piteros and garrobos too
    Which are good for fattening.
That’s my life as a stranger
    I work tirelessly
With my machete and a good plow
I wait for the rainy season to sow
But oh Jesus! What will they say…
