Consular Services
Information on procedures, requirements, and available services.
ID Enrollment
Identity cardInformation:
DNI (National ID) enrollment is the process of registering or updating the information of Honduran citizens over the age of 18 with the National Registry of Persons (RNP). During this procedure, fingerprints, a photograph, and a signature are collected, and personal and residential information is updated.
Requirements:
- Previous Honduran identity card, Honduran passport, or Honduran birth certificate.
- If you are over 18 and have never applied for a DNI, you must appear with a Honduran witness who can confirm your identity. If the witness is a relative, they must be within the fourth degree of consanguinity.
IMPORTANT: The procedure is free of charge for the first-time application. For a replacement due to loss, a fee of $25 (USD) is required.
Passport 10 year
For adults (21+ years old)Information:
Individuals over the age of 21 may choose between a 5-year or 10-year passport.
Requirements:
- Proof of appointment.
- Valid Honduran identity card (DNI) or proof of having completed the enrollment process for the DNI.
- Honduran passport booklet (valid or expired).
Passport 5 year
For adults (21+ years old)Information:
Individuals under the age of 21 are only eligible for a 5-year passport.
Requirements:
- Proof of appointment.
- The minor’s Honduran birth certificate.
- A valid national ID (DNI) or passport for both parents.
If one or both parents are absent, the minor must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 21, who must present their own valid national ID (DNI) or passport. Additionally, the appropriate authorization—duly authenticated or apostilled—must be provided, along with a printed copy of the parents’ national ID (DNI) or passport.
Birth Registration
Individuals under 21 years of age born abroadInformation:
Birth registration allows for a person born abroad to be registered in Honduras, provided that one of their parents is Honduran. This process can be carried out from the time of birth until the individual reaches the age of 21.
Requirements:
- Appointment confirmation.
- A valid Honduran national ID (DNI) or passport for both parents. If one of the parents is a foreign national, they must present a valid passport from their country of citizenship.
- An original birth certificate, duly apostilled by the appropriate authority in the state where the child was born. All foreign birth certificates must be apostilled, regardless of the individual’s age. The process cannot be completed without the apostille.
- Birth details: time of birth, weight, and blood type.
- This procedure applies from birth up until the individual turns 21.
IMPORTANT: This process is entirely free of charge.
Before requesting an apostille, check with the relevant authority in the state where the birth occurred to see if the request can be made online, whether an appointment is required, and what the cost of the apostille is. Ensure that all requirements are met before arriving for your appointment.
The registration is completed on the day of your appointment. Upon completion, you will receive the original Honduran birth certificate and a registration record signed by the parents.
NOTE: If the individual is 21 years of age or older, the registration must be handled directly in Honduras through a trusted lawyer, as the individual has reached the age of majority.

If the person is an attorney, they must also provide a copy of their membership card from the Honduran Bar Association (Colegio de Abogados de Honduras).
NOTE: Granting a power of attorney means authorizing another person to act on your behalf in Honduras. Therefore, it is important to be clear about which specific procedures or actions you wish to authorize.
Special Power of Attorney
For specific proceduresInformation:
A Special Power of Attorney (*Poder Especial*) is a document that authorizes an individual—referred to as the “attorney-in-fact” (*apoderado*)—to carry out specific procedures or actions on behalf of another person, known as the “principal” (*poderdante*). It may be used before judicial, public, or private entities, including banks.

Subsequently, the document must be taken to Tegucigalpa or San Pedro Sula to authenticate the Consul’s signature and complete the process in Honduras.
Marriage certificates issued solely by a city, county, or court—including those that feature only a gold seal—are not accepted.
The marriage certificate must be an original document, duly certified by the Department of Health—Division of Vital Records—of the relevant state.
Example: In Virginia, the document must state “Virginia Department of Health – Division of Vital Records,” as shown in the provided example.

- Honduran national ID (DNI) or passport of the deceased.

Subsequently, the document must be taken to Tegucigalpa or San Pedro Sula to authenticate the Consul’s signature and complete the procedure in Honduras.
Visas
Entry of foreigners into Honduras
Information:
A Honduran visa is an authorization that allows foreign citizens to enter Honduras.
Depending on your nationality and the type of passport you hold, you may be exempt from a visa, or you may be required to obtain a consular visa or a “consulted” (pre-approved) visa. There are also special provisions that may alter the applicable category in certain cases.
For this reason, it is important to verify which requirements apply to your specific nationality before beginning the application process.
If a visa is required, please read the requirements carefully and arrive for your appointment with all the requested original documentation.
Requirements:
- A valid passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity.
- A flight reservation showing your entry into and departure from Honduras, along with your travel itinerary.
- Proof of employment or student status, such as an employment contract or a letter issued by your employer.
- Bank statements from the last 3 months.
- A personal letter stating the duration of your stay in Honduras and the port or location through which you will enter the country.
- Proof of your current immigration status in the United States (e.g., student, tourist, diplomat, etc.).
- Two passport-sized photographs.
- Proof of any valid visas for other countries, if applicable.
- An invitation letter or a hotel reservation in Honduras.
Fees:
- Transit Visa: $30 — valid for entry and departure within 96 hours.
- Single-Entry Visa: $30 — allows for one entry and a stay of up to 90 days.
- Multiple-Entry Visa: $60 — valid for 1 year; available only after having previously obtained a single-entry visa.
Check Country:
What does each category mean?
Visa-Exempt (A)
You do not need to apply for a visa to enter Honduras. You may travel by presenting your valid passport, subject to the applicable entry requirements.
Consular Visa (B)
You need a visa to travel to Honduras, but no prior authorization from within Honduras is required. You may apply for the visa directly at a Honduran consulate by submitting the necessary requirements.
Visa Subject to Consultation (C)
You must apply for a visa before traveling to Honduras. The application must be sent to Honduras for review and authorization; therefore, submitting the required documents does not guarantee that the visa will be approved.
