Anthem La Granadera – Lyrics

The anthem “La Granadera” is a composition by the illustrious Honduran intellectual Rómulo E. Durón.

It was originally the anthem of the United Provinces of Central America and, after the dissolution of the Federation, remained the de facto anthem in several Central American states until the mid-20th century. Its international significance was formalized on June 22, 1971, when the Organization of Central American States (ODECA) officially adopted it.

In the specific case of Honduras, given the absence of an official anthem for 94 years, “La Granadera” fulfilled that role in civic and cultural events. This tradition lasted until 1915, the year in which the current National Anthem of Honduras, composed by Augusto C. Coello and Carlos Hartling, was officially adopted.

Other musical pieces before 1915: Before the official adoption of the current anthem, various patriotic compositions were sung in Honduras, such as:

  • Martial Hymn (José Antonio Domínguez)
  • A Honduran Salute (Author unknown)
  • National Anthem (Valentín Durón)
  • Honduran Anthem (Félix A. Tejeda)

I
Now we see, my Fatherland, in your east
a new sun spreading light,
Now we can with reverent voice
Pronounce, God, Union, Liberty

II
Your life and your destiny will now change,
Your children will be one single man
Now there will be no more war to the death among them;

And happy, they will cultivate your good

III
Now you will be able to attain pure glory,
The tenacious dream of your heroes
And the laurel of your splendid history
Will be a sign of triumph and peace

IV
Hail, Fatherland, your beautiful Flag
Shines in the wind, the color of the sky,
In its shade we swear everywhere
to conquer or die for your honor
