The municipality of Santa Rosa de Aguán belongs to the department of Colon.
In the population census of 1887, it was part of Trujillo. It was established as a municipality in 1892. In the territorial political division of 1896, it was listed as a municipality in La Mosquitia; by the late 19th century, it was categorized as a municipality in the Colón department.
